Learning outcomes

By the end of this PD, participants will:

  • See engagement as experienced, not taughtread it as something children live in the room (safe, seen, capable), not a trait they have or lack.
  • Put belonging firstrecognize why safety and connection come before attention and participation in the early grades.
  • Build warm attentiondesign focus that's clear and reachable, instead of demanding "eyes on me."
  • Offer choice within structuregive small, real choices inside clear routines: support and freedom together, not more options.
  • Read the quiet check-outssee the Watcher, the Quitter, and the Drifter as unmet needs, not behavior problems.
  • Agree on shared movesleave with a few practices every room runs the same way, K–5.
  • Name the ask to leadershipsurface the time and support that make engagement stick.

GRADE-BAND ADD-ONS

Engagement looks different at every age.

The core library gives your whole team one shared picture of engagement. But what a kindergartner needs to take part isn't what a fifth grader needs — belonging comes first for the youngest, competence becomes the engine in the middle grades, and by upper elementary the work has to feel like it's theirs.

These grade-band sessions take each team deeper into its own age, using the same three levers — relationships, attention, and choice — matured to fit the child. The Administration Capstone then gathers what every band is sending up and turns it into a building-wide engagement policy. Each is included in All Grade Bands and Everything.

K–1 · Lower Elementary — Where Engagement Begins

Five- and six-year-olds don't decide to engage — they engage when the room feels safe, warm, and predictable. For the youngest learners, belonging comes first: a child who doesn't feel safe and connected can't yet attend or take part. This session helps the K–1 team agree on shared ways to build belonging first, make attention warm rather than demanded, and offer small real choices inside clear routines.

2–3 · Middle Elementary — Where Engagement Grows

By second and third grade, children are quietly deciding whether they're "good at" school. Belonging still holds the floor — but now competence is the engine: kids lean into what they believe they can get better at and avoid what they've decided they're bad at. This session helps the 2–3 team keep belonging steady, build genuine competence, and start handing over real ownership.

4–5 · Upper Elementary — Where Engagement Becomes Theirs

In fourth and fifth grade, engagement follows relevance and a real say. Belonging now widens to peers, students invest when they can see why the work matters, and agency takes hold — they can self-direct, set goals, and own choices. This session helps the 4–5 team widen belonging to peers, make the work relevant, and grow real agency without losing structure.

Administration · The leadership capstone

Student Engagement in School Leadership — The session for building and district leaders. After the grade-band teams name what engagement needs at each age, leadership does four things with it: listen across the bands, find the patterns beneath personalities and programs, build the shared systems, and protect them from the schedule, budget, and staff turnover that erase good initiatives. Includes a Policy Drafting Workbook and a one-page Engagement Policy on a Page. Bundled into All Grade Bands and Everything.
