By the end of this PD, participants will:
- See the students no system surfaces — recognize that every support system waits for an event, and the children most in need produce none.
- Run a detection routine — install a scheduled roster pass built on two plain questions, on the calendar instead of in a crisis.
- Match the grade — read a voluntary signal by age: the youngest bring you something, 2–3 show you, 4–5 tell you.
- Keep it honest — track coverage without mistaking a shorter list for a child being reached, and re-sweep on a schedule so it sustains.
Built for the people doing the work.
Elementary building and district administrators who present PD themselves and want it done — principals, assistant principals, instructional coaches, and PD coordinators running staff sessions. If you keep coming back to the quiet children who never set anything off — the ones who do everything right and still slip through — this gives you a system to find them on purpose, tuned to how young children actually signal.

Detection looks different at every age.
A quiet child doesn't signal the same way in kindergarten as in fifth grade. The youngest bring you something — a rock, a drawing; older children show you, then tell you. What a voluntary signal even looks like changes as children grow.
Each grade band gets its own working session tuned to that age, and each ends by assigning children to proximate adults. The Administration Capstone then turns all three bands into one coherent, building-wide detection policy your board can adopt.
K–1 · Lower Elementary
The youngest children signal by bringing you something — a rock, a leaf, an unasked-for drawing. The K–1 session tunes the roster read to voluntary initiation at its earliest form, with a first pass that waits until weeks of shared time make a quiet child's absence meaningful.
2–3 · Middle Elementary
By second and third grade, a voluntary signal is a child showing you more than they tell you. The 2–3 session calibrates the two questions to what initiation looks like at this stage, so the pass catches the children who never raise a hand.
4–5 · Upper Elementary
In upper elementary, a signal is a child telling you something, unprompted. The 4–5 session anchors the roster read where a peer-reviewed study measured teacher detection directly — a substantial share of struggling students went unnominated.
Administration · The leadership capstone
The leadership session that turns the grade-band work into one building-wide detection policy — with a Policy Drafting Workbook and a one-page Policy on a Page your board can adopt.
