- Presence vs. belonging — recognize, from real classroom signals and the research, why a student can be fully placed in the general classroom and still not be a member of it.
- Name and assess the ten dimensions of belonging — use the present-invited-welcomed-known-accepted-involved-supported-heard-befriended-needed framework as a Belonging Audit to see where a specific student is strong and where they're thin.
- Recognize the proximity paradox — spot when well-meant adult support has tipped into dependence and separation from peers, and apply concrete moves to fade support without withdrawing care.
- Apply the Age-25 Test — evaluate any support against whether it grows or replaces a student's independence, grounded in the evidence that self-determination predicts post-school employment and community access.
